Creative Critical Reflection
1. One of the main points I wanted to convey in my Everybody Wants to Rule the World music video was the bright cheesiness of the 80s. This meant that I didn't challenge conventions, but instead used them to my advantage. The staples of the 80s were big hair, bright clothes, statement makeup, and dramatizations. The 80s also saw the growth of the teenage market. Movies like 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off showcased the American teenage dream and catered to a market that, prior to this decade, was under-saturated with media representation.
2. My music video engages with audiences that yearn for nostalgia. This doesn't necessarily mean people who grew up in the 80s, I personally feel a sense of nostalgia for the time period even though I wasn't born until 2005. The video can remind people that life isn't all seriousness, and that it is necessary for all of us to enjoy the simple things once in a while. In real media text, my video could be uploaded to YouTube for Vevo, since that is the network that comes to my mind first when I think of music videos. It could have also been on MTV since it stands for 'Music Television' and was most prominent in the 80s for being the main source of watching music videos. Lastly, my video could be on throwback shows like Stranger Things, which is what inspired me to choose the song I did.
3. More so than the last project, my production skills greatly improved throughout making this video. My editing has been refined since I've adapted to using Clipchamp. I learned how to execute my transition and filtering ideas, as well as making the shots less choppy. I have also gotten more comfortable with being in front of the camera and directing someone else when they are filming me. Picking what wardrobe pieces to wear and how to do my makeup was a challenge, especially since that was something I didn't need to consider in the commercial project, but I believe I pulled it together effectively. Although I still need to become more confident when there are people around when the cameras are rolling, I consider this project a big step forward in building my confidence as a filmmaker.
4. In this project, I started using the software Clipchamp.' This made my post-production extremely easy and cut the time I would usually spend editing in half. In my last project I used my in-phone editing tools to edit some of the video, which was over-simlified and un-professional. As opposed to other editing softwares, Clipchamp is beginner-friendly and doesn't try to present itself as an in-depth, hard to learn tool. For some slow-motion shots, I downloaded the app Video Speed Changer and transferred that to my laptop for post-production.
