Shop 'til You Drop! Production Day 7
In a very last-minute call, I asked my best friend to play herself in my opening. She was more than happy to be at the mall, even if it was just to film. The night before we met, I sent her the script for the mall scenes and what to wear. Even though she didn't have any of her clothes from middle school, she wore an outfit she bought in 9th grade. On our way to the mall, I showed her the inspiration for this scene from the movie Eighth Grade, which I've referenced in previous blogs.
Our first stop in the mall was in the Claire's store. I felt relieved that there was a decent amount of foot traffic in there since I thought people wouldn't pay much attention to us. Turned out, I was wrong. There were a few wide-eyed curious kids that watched Cece and I film, so naturally, their parents watched us too. The previous projects had me adapt to being in front of the camera, but now I had to act and project in a crowd all while wearing clothes that I no longer felt comfortable in since I was playing a 13-year-old me. Although I had earlier perceived my script realistic to how people talk naturally, Cece encouraged me to take it a step further by using filler words like "um" or "like." In turn, these filler words made the actual acting more relaxed and helped the quality finished product since pre-teens use a lot of filler words.
Our next shooting location was in a Macy's dressing room. Thankfully, we found another busy area where the people around us wouldn't pay attention to what we were doing. I had to be quick for the shots that took place outside of the actual dressing room due to customers constantly going in and out of the dressing rooms. Cece was the camera operator for a shot where Annie was looking at herself in the mirror.
The last shooting location of the day was at the food court, where I enlisted the help of my mom to shoot a side shot of Cece and me talking. It was difficult to find a place where it wasn't overly loud, and my mom had to keep reminding us to project. Because my phone was at the side of us, it was extremely hard for our voices to reach the microphone, but in the end, we made it work and I'm satisfied with the finished products.
