Creative Critical Reflection

 1. One of the main points I wanted to convey in my Everybody Wants to Rule the World  music video was the bright cheesiness of the 80s. This meant that I didn't challenge conventions, but instead used them to my advantage. The staples of the 80s were big hair, bright clothes, statement makeup, and dramatizations. The 80s also saw the growth of the teenage market. Movies like 16 Candles , The Breakfast Club , and Ferris Bueller's Day Off  showcased the American teenage dream and catered to a market that, prior to this decade, was under-saturated with media representation. 2. My music video engages with audiences that yearn for nostalgia. This doesn't necessarily mean people who grew up in the 80s, I personally feel a sense of nostalgia for the time period even though I wasn't born until 2005. The video can remind people that life isn't all seriousness, and that it is necessary for all of us to enjoy the simple things once in a while. In real media text, my video cou...

Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Image
This is my finished music video for Everybody Wants to Rule the World . I'm happy that I chose this song since I've always loved older music. Now that I see the finished product, I think my planning could have been better. I would have liked to film at more locations like I had originally hoped for. Still, I'm surprised that I learned how to use Clipchamp and the effects it offers. This is a huge step up from my first project, where communication affected the final product.

Production Blog 6: Last Day of Filming Awkardness!

My set on my last day of filming was my front yard. This proved to be difficult since I was shooting during rush hour and everyone was coming home. My neighbors were coming home from work and people were taking their evening walks street by street. The reason I had to film at this time because I wanted the sunset to be in the background. At the very beginning of the video, I can be seen looking to the right. This is because a lot of cars pass by my street, and I thought one was coming my way. My finger also slipped, and it made the volume of the radio much louder than I intended. I thought that if I had the radio with me, I could at least dance along to whatever song was playing, but instead, it was playing a Spanish Disney Plus commercial with no rhythm. Not only did this make the experience awkward, but my mom who was holding the camera was laughing at me (in a loving way.) To the blind eye, this video doesn't seem inherently embarrassing. However, out of frame, my neighbor was w...

Production Blog 5: Wardrobe

Image
When I chose Everybody Wants to Rule the World , I didn't factor in whether or not my wardrobe would match the 80s aesthetic. When I recently looked through my wardrobe, I noticed that if I put certain clothing articles together in ways I never did, it could pass as vaguely 80s clothing. The following are outfit options I came up with. There will be a corresponding scrunchie and earrings for each. These jeans will be used in all the outfits since they remind me of what is known as mom jeans. Mom jeans were popular with, you guessed it, moms in the 80s and 90s, and are currently coming back into the fashion stage for a younger audience. Sweaters were a must-have, so I pulled out this sweater with a red heart pattern. I used a satin red scrunchie to go with it in case I needed to tie my hair back. Finally, I chose signature hoop earrings because they are timeless, and hoops were worn by a lot of people in the 80s. Bomber jackets became a must-have in the 80s. As shown in the picture ...

Production Blog 4: Editing

I downloaded Clipchamp for my editing software. The video shown is a screen recording of me downloading, naming, and exporting the raw footage of my music video. The reason it is sped up is because the actual time it took for me to figure out Clipchamp was about 10 minutes. At first, I was a bit confused as to why my video was so choppy when there was a transition between two clips. I thought the problem would resolve itself if I just exported my video as it was, so I tried to do that. Clipchamp actually showed a pop-up saying that I hadn't fixed the gaps. Instead of saving the video anyways, I went back to the video editing. I then noticed that if I right-clicked on the visible gaps between clips, there was an option to delete them. Once I deleted each gap, the video wasn't choppy and was smooth. One thing I like about Clipchamp is that it is a very user-friendly software. By user-friendly, I mean that they offer help in-app if they detect something that could be wrong with th...

Production Blog 3: Makeup

Image
To accompany the 80's style, I wanted to do a bold and bright makeup look. I recorded myself putting on the makeup and sped it up using the app "Video Speed Changer." What is shown below is the basic eye makeup. In order of the video, I first show the lip balm I put in beforehand. After I put concealer under my eyes, then eyeliner, and finally I apply eyebrow gel and smooth it out. In the next clip, I show a bright pink lipstick that I substitute for eyeshadow. I've had the lipstick since I was 13 and I never use it, so to make this process budget-friendly, I dug it up and used it on my eyelids. I made sure not to smudge the eyeliner I had put on and went beyond my crease line to make a more dramatic look. After, I put on mascara and the eye makeup is done. Finally, I use purple lipstick excessively as a blush. I didn't worry much about blending since it would pop more on camera if I didn't blend as much. I then line my lips and use pink lipstick to blend it. ...

Production Blog 2: The Roller Rink

Image
One of my inspirations for this music video was Stranger Things, which is set in the 80s. One of the scenes from the first episode of season 4 was at a roller rink. My best friend, CeCe, loves to skate and had a small party at Galaxy Skateway on Saturday to celebrate her birthday. She wanted to teach me to skate, which didn't go well. Nonetheless, she skated her heart away. I tried to get footage while I was on the rink for a POV shot, but they didn't allow phones while on the rink. Instead, I took a video directly behind the rink border. This location was the perfect set choice that I didn't choose. The neon lights captured the brightness of the 80s, and the flashing lights helped to cover the fact that everyone there was not wearing the wardrobe of the 80s. I will edit this clip down in the final product, and I am considering adding a grainy filter over it to add a nostalgic feel like the duck and car shots. One of the takes I did is for a tilt movement from the ceiling ...

Production Blog 1: the Cars and the Ducks

Yesterday was my first day of filming. I live in a neighborhood with a canal along the walkway, which is where I shot the take of the group of ducks. Since I won't be shown in any of the car or wildlife shots, it didn't matter what I was wearing. I recorded on my phone camera and stayed a considerable distance away from the ducks so they wouldn't get scared and waddle away. Because of this, I had to zoom in on my phone, which made the footage a bit grainy. In the end, I feel like this drop in quality worked in my favor since the cameras used in the 80s weren't the clearest either. It added a nostalgic feel, like a home movie. I also stayed about 2 feet behind the line where the road and the grass begins to film cars passing by. My neighborhood recently had it's speed limit lowered, which is great for safety but not for my music video. I couldn't seem to get the type of shot I wanted with the cars zooming past. Instead, I decided to film them coming up and get th...
